Grammar Rules: i.e. and e.g.

Occasionally, we come across the abbreviations i.e. and e.g., but what do they mean, and what is the difference between them? How do grammar rules apply?

These two terms originate in the Latin language and are just two of the many Latin phrases that have survived into modern language.

Both i.e. and e.g. are abbreviations for longer Latin phrases, so one of the smartest ways to memorize these terms is to learn what they stand for.

The New Face of GrooveShark

I like listening music on grooveshark. It’s because I don’t have a lot of money and I like listening music. I was trying so many different musicians and genres on this site.

So, whatever….

You can do a quick search on google about grooveshark if you want.

My point is that, Grooveshark changed its user interface recently.

Some of you will remember that in old interface, playlists were at left side. More importantly, important buttons(play, pause, next, etc.) were not that pretty.

It’s good to see that they are doing some things for users.

Ignorance is Bliss for a Creative Mind

The saying “Ignorance is bliss” originates in Thomas Gray’s poem “Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College” (1742).
The quote goes:

“Where ignorance is bliss,
’tis folly to be wise.”

Face it: you were better off not knowing that, weren’t you?

Generally speaking, ignorance is a detestable state of mind. The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to deal with life. But ignorance itself doesn’t equal stupidity. For instance, I view myself as someone who is smart enough to realize his huge capacity for stupidity. I know there are massive gaps in my cultural and general knowledge. I would define my intellectual state as, at times, unaware. But who am I kidding? In some areas of life, I’m just plain ignorant, even if not by choice.

Kitabında Türk okullarında çalışan öğretmenlere yönelik ‘ajan’ iftirasında bulunan eski MİT görevlisi Osman Nuri Gündeş ile bu iddiayı köşesine taşıyan Milliyet yazarı Can Dündar, tazminata mahkûm oldu. Bakırköy 4. Asliye Hukuk Mahkemesi’nde açılan dava önceki gün sonuçlandı. Dündar ile Gündeş’e 5’er bin lira tazminat cezası verildi. Osman Nuri Gündeş, 2010 yılında yayınlanan kitabında, “Fethullah Gülen Gerçeği” başlığı altında birtakım iddialarda bulunmuştu. Yalan ve iftiralar içeren kitabı Can Dündar da köşesine taşımış ve tam sayfa haberleştirmişti. Bunun üzerine Fethullah Gülen Hocaefendi’nin avukatları iki ismi dava etti. Avukatların mahkemeye sundukları dilekçede, “Gündeş’in kitabının müvekkilimizle ilgili kısmı tamamen uydurmadır. Gündeş, MİT eski bölge başkanı olması sıfatını kullanarak, iddialarına inandırıcılık sağlamaya çalışmaktadır.” ifadelerine yer verdi. Avukatlar, dilekçelerinde söz konusu iftiraları köşesine taşıyan Can Dündar hakkında da şu değerlendirmeyi yaptı: “Bir yazının yayınlanmasından önce iyi niyetli ve özenli bir araştırma yapılması objektif gazeteciliğin gereklerindendir. Davalılar özenli davranmamış, iddiaları araştırmaksızın yayınlamışlardır. Bu haksız ve hukuka aykırı yayınla müvekkilimin saygınlığı hedef alınmış ve hakkında kuşku uyandırılmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu itibarsızlaştırma eylemi basın özgürlüğü kapsamında yorumlanamaz.” Avukatların başvurusunu değerlendiren Bakırköy 4. Asliye Hukuk Mahkemesi, önceki gün davaya ilişkin kararını açıkladı. Mahkeme, Can Dündar ve Osman Nuri Gündeş’i tazminata mahkûm etti.

I was actually complaining about my English course because of the essay assignments. However, I realized that the “outline” is everything… When you have a complete outline, the only thing that you must do is explaining the quotations and paraphrazings… Spend 2-3 hours on outline and write your essay in 2 hours. 😀

An Encouraging Story

Part of the seventh and final generation of a carefully designed pedigree, Nortrom was bred by the ancient order of the Aeol Drias to be the greatest magic user the world had ever seen. He was the prophesied one, the culmination of two-hundred years of careful pairings, a war-mage who would bring glory to the order, and destruction to their sworn enemies, The Knights of the Fold.

Raised with other young mages in a hidden cantonment among the hills of the Hazhadal barrens, the order’s preceptors waited for Nortrom’s abilities to manifest. While the other students honed their talents with fire, or ice, or incantatory spells, Nortrom sat silent and talentless, unable to cast so much as a hex. As the day of final testing approached, he still hadn’t found his magic. In disgust, the preceptors berated him, while the children laughed. “You are no mage,” the head of the order declared. Still, Nortrom did not slink away. He entered the day of testing and faced down the young mages who had mocked him. And then his preceptors learned a valuable lesson: a lack of magic can be the greatest magic of all. Nortrom silenced the young mages one by one and defeated them in single combat, until he alone stood as champion of the Aeol Drias, in fulfillment of the prophecy.
